One of my Clarion instructors, the delightful Nina K Hoffman, introduced us to a sciency thing called Le Chatelier's principle-
'When pressure is applied to a system in a state of dynamic equilibrium, the system will adjust to accomodate the pressure and establish another state of dynamic equililibrium.'
Nina holds this to be the basic expression of story structure. I do believe I entirely agree.
Its as simple, and as horrifically complex, as that.
As much as I really hate all reductive definitions of what story is this is a definition that I can mostly agree on.
